Why have a Charter Broker when you can go directly to the operator?

This is a topic that I discuss all the time with existing clients and prospect clients. I often see clients trying to go the operator directly and the one thing I always see happening in the end is that they went directly to them and they got burned. They then call me back and say I was put on so and so’s plane and it had a horrible interior and did not have enough baggage.

The reason for this is because when you call an operator they put you only on the planes they have in their fleet. Some operators do use other fleets but most of them use their own fleets. So if I called in as a retail client and said I need a Gulfstream G-550 for LA to Europe and they didn’t have one they would quote you on something in their fleet that may work.

If you had a charter broker, they would find you the best deals all the time, on the best and newest aircraft. At least I do. There are some charter brokers that try to maximize their profit by putting you on the cheapest aircraft that will work for your mission.

The difference between a charter broker and an operator is that the charter broker has access to over 16,000 aircraft worldwide, where as the operator only has a few. Another plus for having a charter broker is that they will look for one ways and empty legs when you have a trip coming up. For example, I have a client flying from Hawaii to California this April one way.

Normally a local charter operator in Hawaii or California would charge him $50k+ for the one way. This time he is on a true one way and is only paying $41k. That is because I have been looking for an empty leg for him for over two months in advance.

If you had a local operator quote you a one way price from LA to New York they would charge you a round trip price, where as charter brokers know to look into one way operators. And there are only a handful in the USA that do it. You could pay between $50k-$60k for a one way with the local operator, where as with a one way operator you would pay between $26-35k for the one way.

That is the plus for having a charter broker in these situations. Yes it may cost you 10% on top of that flight charge, but the charter broker just saved you a ton of money for just that one flight.

So if you were looking to charter a jet in Los Angeles and only knew a few operators, you may be missing better operators. And of course if you called your local operator they wouldn’t say by the way did you call so and so with that Hawker 1000, because they want to sell you only on their fleet and not other people’s fleet.

A charter broker looks at everyone’s fleet all the time, gets quotes from all of them and then tells you what they would recommend. There are some charter brokers that I see now who have no idea what aircraft to use for that mission and it drives me nuts because they shouldn’t be in this business.
