Geneva to Megeve – The Six Ways to Get From the Airport to the Resort

Geneva to Megeve – The Six Ways to Get From the Airport to the Resort

What is the best way from to get from Geneva to Megeve?

The journey from Geneva to Megeve takes approximately 1hr 15mins depending on traffic conditions.

The Airport is located just over the Swiss border, straight down the A40 which runs all the way into Chamonix. For Megeve you leave the motorway at the mountain valley town of Sallanches and work your way up from there, with spectacular views to take in on the way. We pass through the pretty small resort of Combloux en-route, described by Victor Hugo as “the pearl of the Alps”.

Having climbed up to altitude, the beauty of the surrounding area hits you, and with Megeve sat in a shallow valley, you have a panorama of peaks around you.

The options for how to get there are as follows:

1. Hire a car from the airport

2. Book a Shared Transfer

3. Book a private transfer

4. Book a taxi

5. Get the SAT bus

6. Get the train to St Gervais Le Fayet, then a bus or a taxi to Megeve.

The quickest method is a private transfer, you arrive at Geneva to someone holding a sign with your name on, you go straight to their minibus and straight on the road, from the arrivals hall to your chalet in under 1hr 30mins, and will cost between 120€-200€ each way, depending on the number of passengers.

A shared Transfer is a good option if you’re travelling solo, and might not take any longer at all than a private transfer, but you might equally be waiting for an hour for another passenger to land. From arrivals hall to your chalet in between 1hr 30mins and 3hrs Cost: between 30€-50€ per person each way.

A taxi is obviously just as quick as a transfer, but probably twice the price, and you wont be able to fit as many people or bags in the car. Time: 1hr 25mins Price: 200€-400€ each way.

Car Hire is a surprisingly good value option for families, its not necessarily cheaper up front, but can save you time and money during your holiday, you can stop in at the supermarket in the valley for example, which is much cheaper. But the big advantage is the flexibility, you can have a day away easily, drive to the lifts rather than stand around waiting for the ski bus, and you know that you’re not having to rely on anyone else.

If you do hire a car though, make sure you pick it up from the Swiss side of Geneva Airport, not the French, as this will mean it comes equipped with snow tyres/chains, and the swiss Toll sticker. There can be a queue at the hire desk on busy weeks, so expect to be at the airport for 30mins-1hr before you’re off on your way. Time to Megeve: 2hrs-3hrs30mins Cost: from 400€ for 7 days (depending on the model etc).

Public transport is fantastic in Switzerland, unfortunately this doesn’t apply to getting to Megeve. Its possible to get a train to St Gervais Le Fayet, for around 50€per person, but this is still a 25 minute taxi (50€+), or infrequent bus ride away. Time: 3-4hrs Cost:100€+

The bus from the airport is a bit better and not very expensive. You can get the s51/s55/H45 SAT bus to Sallanches twice a day, and then the 70xx bus from Sallanches to Megeve with up to a 30minute wait in Sallanches (not the most beautiful train station in the world). Time:2-3hrs if you time it right. Cost: around 40€

So there are certainly options available, and depending on your situation, you might rank one as best. Personally I’m biased, because I am a private transfer driver, but its your choice.
